I don’t usually talk about Grammar Hack for IELTS here, but when I do… it’s the kind that makes your IELTS Writing and Speaking scores go up up up! 🚀 So buckle up—because what I’m about to share could significantly improve your IELTS score.
Why Grammar Matters (Yes, Even If You’re Already Good at English)
One of my clients had excellent English. Great vocabulary, strong understanding of the language. But somehow, her Writing scores just didn’t reflect that.
She kept making two common mistakes:
Repeating the same words (👎 IELTS hates this!)
Using words that didn’t really fit the topic
And she used very a lot. Like… a lot a lot. 😅
Now, I’m not here to tell you to never use the word very. But I am telling you: stop using it again and again and again. There’s a better, smarter way—and it can give your grammar and vocabulary scores a solid boost.
The Secret Weapon: Adverbs of Degree 🧠💡
Here’s the grammar trick you need to know: Adverbs of Degree.
An adverb of degree tells us how much something is or how strongly something happens. It’s like turning the volume up on your sentence 🎚️—more intensity, more clarity, more marks!
Let me show you:
❌ Simple:
Technology is helpful.
She is beautiful.
He did it well.
✅ Upgraded with adverbs of degree:
Technology is remarkably helpful.
She is very beautiful.
He did it extremely well.
See the difference? 👀
Now here’s the real hack: Instead of overusing “very,” start using stronger adverbs of degree that show your range of vocabulary and understanding of grammar.
Here are some examples:
Adjective | Adverb of Degree |
---|---|
significant | significantly |
remarkable | remarkably |
extreme | extremely |
substantial | substantially |
These can go with:
Adjectives (e.g. “remarkably helpful”)
Verbs (e.g. “significantly improved”)
Example:
❌ Technology has improved human life.
✅ Technology has significantly improved human life.
Boom. 🎯 Instantly more academic, more precise, and more impressive to the examiner.
Why This Hack Works So Well for IELTS 💪
Using adverbs of degree:
Makes your writing and speaking more specific
Shows you understand grammar variety
Demonstrates a rich vocabulary using what you already know
Helps you avoid repetition (bye bye “very” 👋)
It’s one simple change that can help you hit Band 7 or higher.
