IELTS Writing Task 2 Opinion Essays – Pick one side or stay neutral?

When it comes to IELTS Writing Task 2 Opinion Essays, isn’t this the most burning question in your mind?

Last week, one of my clients asked me something that so many IELTS learners wonder about:

“Should I take a balanced view in the opinion essay for IELTS Writing Task 2?”

Even though I have made quite a few posts and videos about this, I feel like one more post will not hurt. If anything, you may find this one more convincing than others.

And this is what I told my client.

No matter what you do, having a strong 💪 opinion is a MUST!

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know I’m all about STRATEGIES.

And when it comes to IELTS Writing Task 2 opinion essays, here’s the number one strategy I always recommend:

👉 Have a clear, strong stance.

Think of your essay like a sweater — your opinion is the thread that holds it all together. If that thread is weak or messy, the whole thing falls apart. But if it’s strong and consistent, chef’s kiss — you’ve got yourself a solid Band 7.0+ essay.

But wait, aren’t there different strategies?

Yes! Of course, there are different ways to approach opinion essays. Some teachers will tell you it’s okay to sit on the fence, give a balanced answer, explore both sides, yada yada…

But me? My job is to help you reach your IELTS target score as fast and as simply as possible. So I always go with the easiest-to-follow, Band-guaranteed strategy.

And that strategy is this:

Choose one side — agree or disagree — and support it with 2-3 strong reasons.

I break this down step by step in my “Everything IELTS – The Comprehensive Guide to IELTS,” which (by the way 👀) is FREE for all my clients. 🎁

So should you ever give a balanced view? 🤔

Look, giving a balanced view can work… if you develop it clearly and logically.

But honestly? It’s trickier to do well.

Most test-takers mess it up by trying to do too much and ending up with a vague, confusing essay. That’s why I steer my clients toward a simpler route: pick a side and build your argument like a boss.

🎥 I actually made a whole YouTube video about this — go check it out on my channel and learn how to structure your opinion essay the right way.

Now let’s practice 👇

Tell me in the comments:

“Do you agree or disagree that punishing children is a good way to teach them what is right and wrong?”

Let’s see how you apply that one strong opinion approach! 💥
