When it comes to the IELTS Listening exam, after spending nearly 11 years teaching clients, and I still believe that IELTS Listening Part 3 is the most difficult section. Why? Because of the overwhelming amount of information presented in a short time, which often leads to confusion and frustration. π΅βπ«
In this article, I will explain why it is difficult and how to improve IELTS Listening Part 3 (observations and advice from someone who has got 9.0 IELTS Listening and taught many people to achieve 7.0+)
β Why is IELTS Listening Part 3 So Difficult?
In Part 3, you usually hear a conversation between two or three people discussing a topic. Throughout the conversation, youβll notice:
They ask and answer questions. β
They provide information. βΉοΈ
They sometimes change their mind and correct previously given information. π
Everything happens quickly and simultaneously, making it hard to keep up. On top of that, you must:
π Read the questions.
π€ Understand the questions.
π§ Remember the questions.
π― Listen for the answers.
Even just talking about it feels exhausting! π₯΅ But thatβs not allβthe question types in Part 3 make it even trickier.
The video below explains in detail two most common IELTS Listening Mistakes directly related to IELTS Listening Part 3.
β‘ The Challenge of Multiple-Choice Questions
One of the most common question types in IELTS Listening Part 3 is multiple-choice. If youβve practiced IELTS Listening before, you probably know that all answer choices will be mentioned in the recording. However:
β Only one option is correct.
β The rest are either mentioned but not confirmed or explicitly rejected.
This means you need to listen carefully, follow the conversationβs twists and turns, and identify the correct answerβall while handling information overload. ππ‘
π The Key to Success: Strategies and Exam Skills
Despite these challenges, many test-takers, including myself and my clients, have scored a perfect 9οΈβ£ in IELTS Listening. In fact, most of my clients score above 7οΈβ£. How do they do it?
Itβs not just about English skillsβitβs about exam skills. Here are some tips for IELTS Listening, especially for multiple-choice questions.
1οΈβ£ Active Listening Practice π§
Instead of passively listening, train yourself to actively engage with the audio. Listen to podcasts, interviews, and IELTS recordings while taking notes. Try summarizing the key points to reinforce your comprehension.
What is active listening and does it help with IELTS?
2οΈβ£ Predicting Answers Before You Listen π§
Before the recording starts, take a few seconds to scan the questions. Try to predict the type of answer you need (e.g., a number, name, or reason). This helps you focus on the right information.
3οΈβ£ Recognizing Distractors β οΈ
In IELTS Listening, incorrect answer choices are often mentioned but later corrected or contradicted. Pay attention to words like however, but, actually, and instead, which signal a change in information.
4οΈβ£ Using Keywords to Guide Your Listening π
Every question has keywords that match words or synonyms in the recording. However, this does not mean that hearing a keyword automatically leads to the correct answer.
π¨ IELTS often uses synonyms or paraphrases instead of exact words from the question, so train yourself to recognize alternative ways of expressing the same idea. Be cautiousβsome keywords may appear in a misleading context, making them distractors rather than clues. Always focus on the meaning, not just the words. ππ
5οΈβ£ Managing Your Time Effectively β³
You donβt have time to dwell on a single question. If you miss an answer, move on and focus on the next one. Staying calm and managing your time wisely will prevent panic and improve accuracy.
6οΈβ£ Practicing with IELTS-Specific Material π
General listening practice is good, but IELTS-style practice is essential. Use official IELTS materials, online practice tests, and mock exams to get used to the format and question types.
7οΈβ£ Developing a Note-Taking System π
During the test, jot down short notes or symbols to help you remember key points. A good note-taking system can be a game-changer in handling information overload.
8οΈβ£ Reviewing Mistakes and Learning from Them π§
After each practice test, go through your mistakes carefully. Identify why you got a question wrong and learn from it. Did you misunderstand the question? Did you get distracted? Improving based on mistakes is key to progress. ππ
