Step 1: Look at the Recipient
The easiest way to decide is to check who you’re writing to.
- Friend → Informal letter
- Boss → Formal letter
- Restaurant Manager (complaint) → Semi-formal or formal
Step 2: Check the Context
The IELTS task gives you:
- The situation (why you’re writing)
- The content (bullet points you must cover)
- The recipient (who you’re addressing)
Together, these tell you the letter type.
For example:
- “Write a letter to your friend…” → Informal
- “Write a letter to your HR manager…” → Formal
Beware of the differences
Formal letter:

Always state the aim of your letter here.
2. Body
Address each bullet point from the task in its own paragraph.
Start with an opening sentence
Add supporting details (2–3 complex sentences)
Use linking words to connect ideas
3. Sign-off
End with:
Your expectations (e.g., “I look forward to your reply”)
An appropriate closing:
Formal: Yours sincerely, Yours faithfully
Informal: Best wishes, See you soon
