The Building Blocks of a Task 1 Report

Every IELTS Task 1 Report must include 3 parts, Introduction, Overview, and Body Paragraphs. You do not need a Conclusion in the IELTS Task 1 Report. It is recommended that you write the Overview right after the Introduction.

Introduction

  • Purpose: Provide a brief overview of the visual representation and the main trends or features.
  • Key Elements:
    • Paraphrase the task prompt.
    • Mention the type of visual.
    • Highlight the time frame or main categories if applicable.
  • Example:
    • “The bar graph illustrates….”

Overview

  • Purpose: Offer a snapshot of the most significant trends or features in the visual.
  • Key Elements:
    • Summarize the overall trend(s) or main features.
    • Keep it concise; aim for one or two sentences.
  • Example:
    • “Overall, it is evident that…”

Body Paragraphs

  • Purpose: Provide detailed information and analysis of the visual representation.
  • Key Elements:
    • Start each paragraph with a clear topic sentence.
    • Support your points with specific data from the visual.
    • Use a variety of vocabulary and descriptive language.
  • Example:
    • “The data reveals that in the year 2010, the percentage of…”
