IELTS Listening Map Labelling questions have scared a lot of learners off (and taken many dreams).
Look at this map and these questions 🗺️

If you’re like many IELTS learners, your reaction might be: What even is this?! 😵
Trust me, I’ve been there. But today, I’m not scared of IELTS Listening map labelling questions anymore — because I’ve mastered two key things that made all the difference.
Before I give you my tips, let’s quickly talk about what these labelling questions are all about. 👇
What Are IELTS Listening Map Labelling Questions?
You’ll be given a map.
You’ll be given some questions.
Then, you’ll listen to a recording describing the locations of different places.
Your task?
👉 Listen carefully
👉 Follow the speaker’s directions
👉 Match the correct places on the map to the questions — while the recording is playing.
Sounds intense? That’s because it is.
Why Are Map Labelling Questions So Difficult?
There are three big reasons why these questions can feel impossible:
1. It’s an exam — and that pressure is real 😬
When you’re under pressure, your brain doesn’t always work at its best. You’re nervous, you’re trying to focus, and suddenly… the recording starts and your brain goes blank.
2. Too much is happening at once 📚👂🧠
You need to:
Listen to the recording
Read the map
Answer the questions
And you have to do all of this at the same time. That’s a lot for one person!
3. IELTS tests your ability to filter information 💡
Not everything in the recording is useful. Some of it is just there to confuse you!
You need to filter out the noise and focus on the information that helps you answer the questions.
The Two Things I Mastered That Changed Everything 🎯
Now let’s talk about what helped me stop being afraid of these questions:
✅ 1. Memorize the Map (Yes, Really!)
Before the recording starts, you get time to read the questions. Here’s the trick:
📌 Spend most of that time studying the map.
I recommend:
2/3 of your time looking at and memorizing the map
1/3 of your time reading the actual questions
Get familiar with the places already labeled on the map — like the Main Road, Museum, or Library. That way, when the speaker mentions them, you won’t be searching like, “Wait, where is that?!”
You should be able to quickly point out key locations before the recording even begins. That mental preparation makes a huge difference.
✅ 2. Know Where You Are Standing 🧍♀️📍
At the beginning of the recording, the speaker will often say something like:
“You are now standing at the entrance.”
This is so important!
If you don’t know your starting point, how will you know where to turn left or right?
Pay close attention to the general description at the start — they often describe a few named places to help you figure out your position. Once you lock in that starting point, you’re ready to follow the directions confidently.
🔑 Bonus Tip: If you can get the first answer right, everything gets easier. The answers usually come in order, so nailing that first one builds momentum.
Practice This in Your Next IELTS Listening Test 🎧
Try these tips the next time you do a practice test. You’ll be amazed how much clearer everything becomes once you prepare before the recording starts and lock in your starting position.
