Embarking on the IELTS Writing Task 2 journey can feel like navigating uncharted waters, given so much information you can find just by a simple Google search. But fear not! Mastering the legendary 3-part Body Paragraph (BP) structure is your compass to success, steering you through the waves of essay writing.
Every IELTS Writing Task 2 Body Paragraph (BP) should include 3 parts, main idea, explanations, and example.
1. ONLY ONE MAIN IDEA
At the heart of every BP lies the Main Idea, a beacon that guides your reader through your thoughts. This idea must shine brightly, clearly, and directly linked to the essay’s Core Idea, which you state clearly in the Introduction. Remember, simplicity is key; stick to one main idea per paragraph.
2. EXPLANATIONS
Right on the heels of your Main Idea come the Explanations or Supporting Ideas. Think of them as loyal companions, enhancing and clarifying the Main Idea. Organize them logically to create a smooth flow that captivates your reader. The goal here is to make your Main Idea crystal clear, leaving no room for confusion.
3. PARAGRAPH EXAMPLE
Now comes the fun part – the Paragraph Example. This is your chance to showcase your creativity and reinforce your Main Idea with real-world connections. Whether personal, factual, or fictional, ensure your example is specific, steering clear of sounding ‘memorized.’ If crafting a make-believe story or research, sprinkle in topic-specific vocabulary for that extra shine. The key is to make your example relatable, avoiding the robotic feel that could impact your score.
To tie it all together seamlessly, don’t forget to utilize connecting words and phrases. These linguistic bridges guide your reader from the Main Idea to the Explanations and finally to the Paragraph Example, creating a cohesive and engaging narrative.
Exception Alert! While the 3-part structure is your go-to approach, there’s an exception worth noting. Stay tuned for a deeper dive into when and how to deviate from this tried-and-true method.
With the legendary 3-part Body Paragraph structure in your arsenal, conquering IELTS Writing Task 2 becomes a journey of creativity, clarity, and connection. This strategy also helps you avoid falling for “idea flooding,” an approach in which a lot of ideas are presented but none of them are developed.

[…] So, rather than listing out ten ideas, it is better to keep two ideas, develop each of them well, and add one example for each. A good formula for IELTS Writing Task 2 is to dedicate the second and third paragraphs of your essay to one idea (with example) each. And each paragraph should follow the 3-part paragraph structure.
