In this article, I will provide you with a few ideas for each view and help you develop those ideas. This is a part of Everything IELTS – Suggested ideas for Writing Task 2, which is free for all remember of Everything IELTS packages.

Topic: Children’s crimes, who to blame?

Some people believe that children who commit crimes should be punished. Others think the parents should be punished instead. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

ATTENTION: In this discussion essay, you can agree with one of the views or have a balanced view. But keep in mind that if you agree with one of the views, that view should be discussed in the last body paragraph with more convincing arguments. Methods to develop the paragraph when you agree with one of the views are also discussed in Everything IELTS.

Punishing children for crimes

Deterrent Effect

Main idea: Punishing children for their crimes can act as a deterrent.

Supporting ideas: This is based on the idea that fear of consequences can lead to better decision-making. ➡ (Completing argument) Discouraging them and others from engaging in illegal activities in the future.

Accountability and Responsibility

Main idea: Holding children accountable for their actions teaches them about responsibility.

Supporting ideas: Understanding the consequences of their behavior at a young age can contribute to their moral development ➡ (Completing argument) help them become responsible members of society.

Protection of Society

Main idea: Punish children for the crimes they commit provide protection for society.

Supporting ideas: Punishment serves to protect society by removing potentially harmful individuals from the community. ➡ (Completing argument) It sends a message that certain behaviors are unacceptable and ensures that those who break the law face appropriate consequences.

Punishing parents for children’s crimes

Accountability and Oversight

Main idea: Punishing parents emphasizes on parental accountability and oversight.

Supporting ideas: Parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing and behavior. Holding parents accountable for their children’s criminal actions reinforces the idea of parental oversight and responsibility, ➡ (Completing argument) ensuring that they take proactive measures to guide their children towards lawful behavior.

Prevention of Neglect or Negligence

Main idea: Punishment for parents can act as a deterrent against neglect or negligence in child-rearing.

Supporting ideas: When parents know that they could face consequences for their children’s criminal acts, they are more likely to provide adequate supervision, support, and guidance ➡ (Completing argument) prevent their children from engaging in unlawful behavior.

Balanced views for children’s crimes

Joint Accountability

Main idea: Responsibility for children’s crimes should be viewed as a shared responsibility between children and parents.

Supporting ideas: Children, especially younger ones who are developing their understanding of right and wrong, should be given proper and adequate punishments. Parents and caregivers are responsible for providing supervision, setting boundaries, and teaching values that deter criminal behavior. So when a child commits a crime, it proves that parents are neglecting these responsibilities, hence they contribute to the child’s involvement in crime and should also receive punishments according to the severity of the crime.

Legal Framework and Punitive Measures

Main idea: The legal system should hold both children and parents accountable within a framework that considers the age and circumstances of the child.

Supporting ideas: Implementing appropriate punitive measures for children while also addressing parental responsibility through education or support programs can be effective in reducing juvenile crime.

Don’t forget to use proper Cohesive Devices in your essay and provide a specific example for each paragraph.
