Agree – Disagree

  1. Employers should focus on personal qualities instead of qualifications and experience when choosing someone for a job. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  2. Too much money is wasted on repairing old buildings that should be used to knock them down and build new ones. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  3. In the future it will become more difficult to live on Earth so more money should be spent researching how to live on other planets such as Mars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  4. Always telling the truth is the most important consideration in any relationship between people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  5. Some people say that schools must provide technology to students. Do you agree or disagree?
  6. Some people say that education should be free for everyone. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  7. Computers today can quickly and accurately translate languages, therefore, it is a waste of time to learn a foreign language. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  8. Many researchers believe that we can now study the behaviour of children to see if they will grow up to be criminals, while others disagree. To what extent do you think crime is determined by genetics? Is it possible to stop children from growing up to be criminals?
  9. It is a natural process by which animal species such as dinosaurs become extinct. There is no reason for people to prevent this from happening. Do you agree or disagree?

Negative – Positive

  1. Nowadays, in many families, the grandparents are responsible for bringing up children. Is it a positive or negative development?
  2. Nowadays, people do not spend time with their families. Why is that? Is it a positive or negative development?
  3. In some countries, owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
  4. Fewer and fewer people today write by hand using a pen or pencil. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?
  5. Governments are spending a lot of money on sculptures and paintings in public places. Is that the use of money is good or bad?
  6. To many people, dressing in fashionable clothing is becoming important. Is this attitude a positive or negative development?

Advantages and Disadvantages

  1. More and more people prefer to buy readymade food from restaurants or convenience stores instead of cooking for themselves. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?
  2. In many countries, fast food is becoming cheaper and more widely available. Do the disadvantages of this outweigh the advantages?
  3. Nowadays, a lot of young people are going to other countries to study. What are the advantages and disadvantages of study abroad?

“Outweigh”

  1. In many countries, businesses are moving to the countryside. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
  2. Some people think the manufacturers and shopping malls should sell fewer packaged products while others argue that people have the responsibility to buy products with less packaging. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
  3. In many cities, planners tend to arrange shops, schools, offices, and homes in specific areas and separate them from each other. Do you think the advantages of this policy outweigh the disadvantages?

Reasons – Solutions/Causes – Effects/Problems – Solutions

  1. People today get less sleep than in the past. What is the cause of this? What are the possible effects of this development?
  2. Today single-use products are still very common. What are the problems associated with this? What are some possible solutions?
  3. In some places, young people find it difficult to communicate with older people. Why is that? What are the solutions to this problem?
  4. As major cities around the world are growing, so are their problems. What are the problems for young people living in cities? What are possible solutions to these problems?
  5. Fewer young people play sports these days. Why is that? What can be done to encourage more young people to do sports?
